The story: A young soldier was once fighting a
battle in a certain desert. His companions were all killed, and he was taken
prisoner by the enemy. He was ill-fed, ill-dressed and ill-treated. He was
forced to labour hard for several hours every day. He bore physical fortune
with great patience. At last some prisoner of war was exchanged, and he set
foot on his native land with great delight. After a few weeks, he was passing through
the main bazaar of his town. He saw many birds kept in cages for sale at a
certain shop. This was enough to remind him of the days of his
imprisonment. “I want to buy all these
birds,” said he to the shopkeeper. How much money do you want for them all?” He
did not believe his ears at what he heard. But he wondered when the young man
paid him the price he had demanded. But he was surprised all the more, when he
saw his customer open the doors of al l the cage. The birds chirped, as they
flew away. And the young soldier said that they were singing songs of freedom!
