THE SUMMER lasts from May to August in Pakistan. The days are
very hot and long. Soon after the sunrise, sometimes it is very close, and not
a single leaf of a tree seems to move. Many men and horses die of sunstroke.
Only the rich can afford to welcome it. They sit under the fans or in
air-conditioned rooms, to enjoy the comforts that their wealth can provide for
them. They go to the hill-stations and stay there, as long as they like. All
schools and colleges are closed, and there is practically no business for about
or five hours around the noon, except that mounds of ice are sold everywhere.
But the farmers lead very busy lives. They are always doing one thing or the
other, from dawn till dusk. If there is no summer, there would be no
evaporation. And, without evaporation. And, without evaporation, there would be
no vegetation, and nothing, for men as well as animals and birds, to drink. So
the heat of the summer is a message of life for all who live in this world.
