HEAVY RAINS were reported in the hills in the last week of July.
And, after a couple of days, the water in the Ravi began to rise. Within
fifteen hours, it exceeded twenty feet at the Shahdara Bridge. There was great
alarm in the city. All schools, colleges and office were closed before noon.
Men, women and children were returning home in great excitement. The bund gave
way, and the flood-water entered the low-laying areas. In the evening it
reached the Shareh Qaid-i-Azam. The situation became very grave. Thousands of
people waded through it to reach some place of safety. There were many more
that shifted to the roofs of their houses. It was the severest flood in living
memory. It washed away hundreds of village, and brought death to thousands of
men and animals. It was Good’s punishment to us for our sins. We begged His
forgiveness, as long as the danger stared us in our faces. But our evil ways
returned to us, as soon as. He gave us another chance to mend ourselves.
