There is a pond in every village. The rain
water and the unclean water of the drains flow into it. Sometimes it spreads
over an area if several acres of land. Children and buffaloes come here for
swimming and bathing. Ladies come here for washing their clothes. Cows, goats,
sheep and horses are brought here for drinking water. Ducks come here for
swimming to their hearts content. It is filled to the full during the rainy
season. Sometimes it spreads all around the village, and makes it look like a
small island it, then, becomes a breading-place for mosquitoes. Malaria spreads
from of an epidemic and takes a heavy toll of life. But the villagers are too
simple to understand that these deaths are all due to the mosquitoes. They turn
to it to water their fields, when the monsoons fail. It is, therefore, of great
use to them, for they cannot do without it.
