The Patwari
is a very important government servant. He keeps a record of the ownership of
all houses and lands in his registers. He also keeps a record of all fields and
the articles sown in these. He calculates the produce of every field, and the
land revenue to be paid by its owner. For this purpose, he has to do a lot of
outdoor work. He goes from field to field to inspect the crops. He notes down
his observations in his registers. And these entries become the base of his
calculations. The farmers, therefore, are greatly afraid of his authority. They
try to please him in every way. They provide him, free of cost, wheat, rice,
pulses, cotton, fuel, ghee and many other articles of his need. They also
provide him with fodder for his horses and cattle. He is very simple in his
dress. But he is very clever and influential. He gets a small salary, but he
enjoys many comforts of life.
