The village
is a place of great importance in every village. It is visited by men, women,
boys and girls many times every day. They come to it to carry home their big
earthen pots, full of cold and fresh drinking water. They draw water from it by
means of a leather bucket, fastened to a long rope. It has a big circular
platform built around it. Sometimes it is all full of pitchers, and people have
to wait for their turn. They stand nearby, talking about many things of local
or personal interest. But, sometimes, they became impatient or lose their
temper. And the result is that they exchange hot words or come to blows. In all
such cases, their elders have to bring them round. The village well is full of
life throughout the day in summer. Many people go there even for taking a bath
or washing their clothes. Others sit or lie down under the shade of the tees
around it, to take some rest.
