The story: a fox had once the misfortune to
fall into a well. He managed not to be drowned. But he could not come out. The
waster was very cold, and he was shivering all over. A wolf happened to pass
that way. He saw the fox in a miserable condition. But he could do nothing to
help him out. “I pity you with all my heart,” said he to the fox, “butt how did
you fall into it?” The fox was filled with fury and said, “It is no use
standing there and pitying me. Help me out, as quickly as you can, or let me
die in peace. I am up to the chin in the cold water of this well, and I cannot
bear it for long.
