The story: Once a king had a jester at
his court. He was a royal favorite. He was very witty and enjoyed great liberty
with him, his ministers and his countries. Before long he began to misuse this favor,
and his practical jokes annoyed every one of them. One day he displeased the
king so much that he ordered his head to be cut off. He fell at his feet and
begged his pardon, but he was not prepared to forgive him. “All that I can do
for you,” Said the king, “is to allow you to choose the way in which you want
to die,” This was a golden chance for the witty fellow to save his neck. “Your
majesty.” Sad he, “I want to die of old age.” The king was greatly amused to
hear his clever reply and forgave him his fault.
