The peacock is a very pretty bird of
hot and dry climate. Its neck is covered with lovely blue feathers. Its body is
green and blue. Its glory lies in its long tail. The feathers over there are
round and large like the leaves of banyan tree. They are a pleasant mixture of
circular shades of green and violet coloures. They are extremely beautiful to
look at. The Muslims love to keep these in the Holy Quran. The Sikhs tie them
into a hand-fan to be used in keeping off flies, when they read the Granth
sahib, their sacred book. The Hindus look upon it as the horse of sarwati, the
goddess of learning, and are deadly against killing it. But it is a great thief
and does a lot of damage to the growing crops. Like the mongoose, it is an
enemy of the snake. It is very proud of its tail and opens it to strut about
with great splendor. Its female, the pea-hen Is no match for it in beauty.
