Once upon a
time fox was caught in trap. He managed somehow to come out of it. But he lost
his tail in so doing. He looked very funny without it. He wanted it. He wanted
the other foxes also to have their tails cut off. This was the only way to get
rid of his sense of shame.
He called them all together and
said, “My friends, I am surprised to see you still wear your tails. They are so
heavy! They look so ugly! People kill us for their sake alone. I fell quite
happy without this old-fashioned thing. My life is very pleasant and free from
all danger now. Have your tails cut off, and enjoy the pleasures of life, as I
do,” But they were too wise to be taken in by his sermon against their tails.
So they said to him, “we are sorry that you have lost your tail in some sad
accident. It is a great tragedy indeed. We have every sympathy for you in your
distress, and we promise not to laugh at you.”
