The story: A
merchant once owned a very beautiful dog. It was worth a lot of money. Many of
his friends offered him a thousand rupees for it. But he always refused to sell
it at so cheap a price. But it was lost by chance. He tried his best to trace
it out, but it was all in vain. At last he lost all hope of ever recovering it.
One day, he was passing through the
bazaar, when he saw it for sale at a shop. He recognized it at once, and
demanded it back from the shopkeeper. But he refused to do so. He said that he
had bought it from a distant town. The merchant was not satisfied with his
reply. “Let it loose and see whether it goes straight to my house or not. If
you don’t I shall report the matter to the police.” The shopkeeper could not
but unchain the dog. It at once began to lick the merchant’s feet, and ran away
to his house, as soon as he asked it to do so. It was undoubtedly his, and the
shopkeeper had to accept his claim.
