The story: A young mother was once washing some clothes at a
well. Her little son was sleeping beside her. Another young woman came there.
She picked up the child and ran away. When the young mother saw her sweet son
missing, she ran after her. Before long she caught hold of her, cursed here for
her meanness and demanded her back. But she refused to do so, and said that the
son was her own. Before long they began to quarrel with each other.
Many
people gathered there, but they failed to find out the real mother. They took
them both to the court of the Qazi . He gave them a patient hearing and thought
over the matter for a while. Then he said to one of his officers, “Bring me my sword.
I shall cut the boy into tow, so that each may have a piece for herself,” One
of the tow ladies began to weep at once she required the Qazi not to kill the
boy, but to give him over to the other. As for the second, she said, “No this
cannot be boy must be cut into two pieces, so that I may have the one; and she,
the other,” When the Qazi heard these words, he ordered the boy to be given
over to the first, and sent the second to jail for child-lifting.
