The story:
Once there was huge rock near the coast of a certain country. It was always
hidden under the waves, in stormy weather. So many ships struck against it and
were wrecked. In this way, it took a heavy toll of fastened a bell to a buoy at
its top. It rang when the waves rose high and warned the sailors against the
danger.
A rover cursed the clergyman for
doing this noble deed and cut off the bell. He felt endless joy, as it sank to
the bottom of the sea. Then plundered many ships and grew very rich with the
booty.
As he was sailing back to his native
town, his ship was overtaken by a dreadful storm. It was surrounded by thick
mist and lofty waves. He lost his way and longed to hear the bell he had so
foolishly cut off. But his ship struck against the dangerous rock and broke
into pieces. He cursed himself for his folly, as his ship sank into the sea and
he was drowned.
Moral: He who digs a pit for others
falls into it himself.
