The story:
An old man and his son were once leading their ass to the market. They were
seen by some boys playing together. They laughed at them and said, “Why are you
going on foot, when you have an animal to ride on?” so the father jumped upon
its back, and the son went on walking as before. After some time, they were
seen by some ladies. They cursed the old man for being so selfish. The father
could not bear their cutting remarks. He, therefore, seated his son behind him.
They were gladly going to the market
in this way when they met some young men. They rebuked them for being so cruel
to their donkey and said, “You are more fit to carry the ass than he is to
carry you.” They got down making amends for their mistaken. They fastened the
legs of the ass together, passed a pole through them and began to carry it on
their shoulders.
Soon they came to a bridge. Some
children laughed and clapped their hand, as they saw them. They should so
loudly that the ass was frightened. He kicked his legs free and jumped over the
bridge into the river. He was drowned.
Moral: Try
to please everybody, and you will please nobody, not even yourself.
