The story:
Once there lived a slave in Rome. His cruel master gave him very little to eat.
He, therefore, ran away into the forest and hid himself in a cave. Soon he saw
a lion coming towards him with a groom. He was too frightened to run away.
Before long, he saw the lion sit beside him, with his paw held up. Trembling
all over, he took it into one of his hands and began to look at it very
carefully. He saw a thorn in it and pulled it out. The lion licked his hand and
went away.
After a few days, the slave was
arrested. The judge ordered him to be put before a hungry lion. On the day
fixed for his punishment, a very large number of people turned up to enjoy the
dreadful scene. They saw a hungry lion rush at him. But, the next moment, they
saw the cruel beast licking, his feet, instead of tearing him into pieces. It
was the same lion of the cave that was grateful to him for pulling out the
thorn from his paw.
The magistrate was deeply moved to
see the gratefulness of the lion. He set the slave free and advised the people
to treat their salves like human beings.
