The story:
once there lived a foolish merchant in a certain village. He had a faithful dog
to watch over his house at night. It saw thief climb down a wall one night and
began to bark, its master got up. But the thief ran away, before he could come
down. He searched the house the house all over, but the thief was nowhere to be
seen. So he was angry with the dog and gave it a good beating, before he went
to bed.
After some time the thief came
again. The dog saw, him, but it did not bark. He made away with all cash and
ornaments, but the dog did not forge to o its duty. It followed him into the
jungle and saw him bury the stolen things under a tree. In the morning the
merchant began to weep over the loss. He was sorry for his folly in beating his
dog. Suddenly it returned home and began to pull at his coat to take him out.
He did not understand what the matter was. But he followed his faithful dog to
the jungle. It stopped beside a tree and began to scratch at the soft earth
under its feet. Before long it dug out the stolen article. He was filled with
endless joy and was always very kind to his dog in future.
