JUST a few minutes before the arrival of a railway train,
coolies begin to squat along the edge of the platform. Some passengers catch
sight of the train by looking into the direction from which she is coming.
Others sit or stand beside their luggage, waiting impatiently for the train to
arrive. Vendors crying at the top of their voices to sell fruit, sweets,
betel-leaves, cigtrates, newspapers and what not. Ticket-collectors and several
other employs of the railway are freely moving about, among the passengers to
do their respective jobs. Suddenly the train appears at some distance. The
coolies and the passengers all stand up, as she approaches the platform. And
the moment she stops, they rush towards the door of one compartment or the
other in order to get in, as soon as possible.
