MY BROTHER
and I were to go Peshawar to attend the marriage of a friend of ours. We packed
up our luggage and set off for the railway station in a taxi. We engaged a
coolie, bought two first-class tickets and reached the platform. The train was
already standing there. She was packed to suffocation. Luckily we got good
seats beside the window. Shortly after that she was in motion. Upto Gujrat she
passed through green fields and long rows of factories. At Lala Musa she ran
over an old man who fell down from the foot-board. So her departure was delayed
by half-an-hour. Upto Rawalpindi she passed through a barren hilly area. An
S.T.E entered our compartment at Nowshera and found there men travelling with
second class tickets. He charged them the excess fare and gave them the option
to get down or to pay more. She passed through many tunnels, before we reached
Peshawar. We were received by our friend, on the platform. We got down, hired a
taxi and drove to his house.
