IT WAS THE month of January. The sun was hidden behind the
dark clouds. Sometimes it flashed, and sometimes it thundered. All of a sudden
rain and hailstones began to fall. People began to tremble with cold. Those who
were at home slipped into their beds, or put on their over-coats, or sat beside
the fire. Those who were in the bazaars, took shelter, wherever they could.
Some stood waiting for the rain to stop. Others entered restaurants to warm
themselves up with tea or coffee. There were still others who began to eat
ground-nuts or dry fruit to while away their time. As for the poor, their lot
was the most pitiable. They went on shivering, because they were not properly
dressed. They gathered around the fire, if they could find it anywhere.
Otherwise they sat close to another, in a corner, to protect themselves from
the cruel blasts of the cold wind. They thanked God, when the rain was over and
began to labour once again to earn their living.
