AN EARTHQUAKE is a dreadful event. It fills every heart with fear. It has geographical causes no doubt. But it is a sign of God’s anger at the misdeeds of man. It rocked Quetta one day in May, 1935. It was one of the greatest disasters in the history of mankind. Its shocks continued for about five minutes at the dead of night, when everybody was fast asleep. Almost every house in the city fell down. Thousands of men, women and children were buried under heaps of bricks and stones. The news of the disaster spread like wild fire throughout the country. The military rushed to the spot for help. Relief work was started for the survivors without any loss of time. Volunteers came from far and near to help the government, but they were not allowed to enter the area. Digging began after some days. Thousands of dead bodies were brought out. This lasted for about six months. New Quetta soon began to be built up. And, by the grace of God, it is a flourishing city once again
