COTTON is grown over a wide area in many hot countries. It is
very useful for man. It is sown during the rainy season. It needs plenty of
heat and water as well as rich soil. Its plants grow to a height of five or six
feet till October, and they bear pretty flowers of yellow colour. These flowers
have tiny green balls in their centre. They go on growing bigger and bigger
and, at last, they turn brown. Then they open, and white soft cotton comes out.
It is to be picked up very quickly, while the weather is still dry. It is full
of seeds which are uses for making oil. And these have to be taken out before
it can be used for making cloth. The United Arab Republic, America, Pakistan
and India are well-known for the growth of this silver fiber. The Greeks
wondered, when they saw “wool” growing on trees in the Indus Valley. They said
so, when they saw cotton for the first time in their lives. The best kind of
cotton gives long fie fibres , and the poorest give short, thick fibres. The
cotton of the Valley of the Nile is the best in the world.
