MENDING a
pencil is an art in itself. It adds to the beauty of a pencil, if one knows how
to mend it properly. I have a way of my own to do so. I hold the pencil in my
left hand and place the end to be mended on the tip of the finger next to my
thumb. I hold the knife in my right hand and place the sharp end of its blade
on the pencil. I cut the wood, bit by bit, and I go on rotating the pencil at
the same time. In this way I go on cutting the layers of wood, till the tip of
the lead appears. Then I sharpen it very carefully to a fine point. I take
every care that it should not break. Now, the pencil is ready for use, and I
can write it anything that I like.
