THE
SUGAR-CANE is a well known crop. It requires rich soil, and hot and moist
climate. It is cultivated in many parts of java, Brazil, Pakistan, India and
the United Arab Republic. It is a tall plant, having a thick stem, with long,
green leaves at the top. Its sweet juice is extracted by means of a crushing
machine, and is sold, in big cities, in glasses to those who want to drink it
fresh. It is also cooked with rice to prepare cane-pudding. It is treated with
certain chemicals and is heated in large shallow pans, in the sugar mills, to
prepare sugar. We use seers of it every month to sweeten used in making many
sweet dishes, jams, jellies and syrups. There are many sugar-mills in our
country. But white sugar is sold at about ten rupees a seer in the market. Our
government is trying to bring down its price, as soon as possible.
