THE BANYAN
TREE is found over the plains of Pakistan. It is very large and has a thick
trunk. Its leaves are also quite thick, and its branches are very long and
strong. Some of them come down like the beard, when it grows old. Before long,
they are hidden under the ground to become the roots of another banyan tree. It
lives for centuries, and hundreds of people can sit in its shade. Its fruit is
very small and round in shape. The villagers hold their meeting under it. They
also sit or sleep over there at noonings under it. It also provides shelter for weary travelers,
from rain and shine. Birds make their nests in its branches. Girls and young
women fasten ropes to its thick branches to enjoy swinging to and from. Hakeems
use its bark, its leaves and its milk for making many medicines. It is, thus,
of great use to man.
